2012/10/23 - Davosa the new Gentleman Automatic

Gentlemen, strap on your dress watches!

Sporty timepieces appear to dominate today’s watch market. Chronographs, pilot’s and diver’s watches often tend to be the watches that find their way onto a man’s wrist.

However there is one type of watch a man simply cannot do without: the classic suit or dress watch. There are many more formal occasions where even the most stylish diver’s watch is not appropriate. This is why a dress watch will always remain an essential part of every man’s watch collection.

The main feature of this category of watches is understatement. An elegant and subtle dial design, coupled with a moderate case size and height – after all, these watches are designed to slip under the cuff whenever required to do so. Other key characteristics of a dress watch include a classic case design, a mechanical movement and an elegant leather strap.

Swiss watchmakers DAVOSA have incorporated all these features into their model range Gentleman Automatic – their successful interpretation of a true gentleman’s watch. The Gentleman Automatic will be available from October 2012 with the dial colours black, silver and blue, and will retail at 698 euros.

Elegant understatement – elaborate detail

Designing an understated watch is much more difficult than you might imagine. It should look simple, yet not in any way cheap. As is so often the case, the difference is in the detail. In the Gentleman Automatic, DAVOSA employs a dial with a sunray finish in winning combination with hand-applied figures and indices. Inside the watch resides a flat Swiss quality ETA 2892-2 movement. It ensures the case remains less than 10 millimetres high, with a moderate diameter of 40 millimetres and a weight of only 70 grams.

The six-fold screwed glass back reveals the flat automatic movement and high-quality, resilient sapphire crystal glass protects the front of the gentleman’s watch from unforeseen scratches. All in all, the DAVOSA Gentleman Automatic is designed to be an archetypal suit watch – which does not mean you cannot wear it every day.

Or to put it another way: Gentlemen, strap on your dress watches!
