2012/08/31 - Christopher Ward 's Stunning New C11 Makaira Pro 500

Named after a genus of several types of marlin which can swim as fast as a cheetah can run, the C11 Makaira Pro 500 is the first in Christopher Ward’s brand new range of dive watches. Just as the Atlantic Blue, Black and Indo-Pacific Blue marlin are among the strongest, fastest and most impressive fish in the world, the C11 Makaira Pro 500 is one of the finest, strongest and most striking dive watches.

The C11 Makaira Pro 500 is water resistant to 500m (the world scuba diving record is 330m). Inside the hand-finished, satin brushed 42mm marine grade stainless steel case beats a self-winding Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement. The watch has a date window, a black face and a choice of white, orange or blue SuperLuminova™ indexes, bezel markings and distinctively wide hands – for extra visibility at extreme depths. At more than 200m below the surface it is unusual for there to be any discernible light and, because every little helps, the watch even has museum grade crystal. Behind that is an internal rotating countdown diving bezel, controlled by an easy-to-grip bezel crown.

The C11’s backplate is engraved with a raised image of a marlin and ‘Sub Caerula Oceanus’ – Latin for ‘Under the deep blue ocean’. Each watch has its own individual serial number and is available with either a stainless steel strap with divers’ extensions (£560) or with a high-grade rubber strap (£499) – a material preferred by many professional divers.

Most people will never get close to testing the 735 pounds per square inch capability of the C11 Makaira Pro 500, but it’s reassuring to know it’s there – whether you’re scuba diving in Mexico or just in the shower!
